Effects of Magneto-Archimedes Levitation on the Quality of HEWL Crystals: Evaluation with White X-ray Topography

Hen egg-white lysozyme crystals (HEWL) were grown in a batch at the air-liquid interface in a levitated state by use of an upward magnetic force. The magneto-Archimedes effect was employed to realize the levitation of the crystals in a relatively small magnetic field generated by a conventional superconducting magnet. Either GdCl3 or NiCl2 was used as a crystallizing agent and also to make the solution paramagnetic. By placing the batch in positions in the magnet where the paramagnetic solution was magnetically pulled strongly downward and the diamagnetic crystals upward, the crystals deposited stably during growth at the air-liquid interface. White X-ray topography indicated that all the crystals so grown were free from distortion, in contrast to the controls grown at the vessel bottom. Possible benefits from eliminating downward forces as well as those brought about by a magnetic field are discussed.
